Frequently asked questions

What sensors does the CIL162 16mm M12 lens support?

The CIL162 supports 1/1.8\" to 1/1.7\" sensors including the Sony IMX226 and ON Semiconductor AR0821. It resolves up to 10MP across an 8.8mm designed image circle (10mm maximum).

How much IR focus shift does the CIL162 have?

Less than 6μm focus shift from visible to 850nm. This is low enough that the lens stays in focus when switching between day and night modes without mechanical refocusing.

Is the CIL162 suitable for license plate recognition (LPR)?

Yes. At 16mm EFL with only -1% distortion, the CIL162 delivers the geometric accuracy and resolution needed for LPR at typical recognition distances. Pair it with an 8MP+ sensor for best character separation.

What cameras are mechanically compatible with the CIL162?

FLIR Blackfly S, Allied Vision Alvium, iDS uEye LE (Rev1.1 and Rev1.2), The Imaging Source M12, and Basler Dart S-mount cameras all mount the CIL162 directly. Use the Commonlands CLA018 holder with a 10-13mm tall mount.

Does the CIL162 16mm M12 lens ship same day from the US?

Yes. Orders placed before 12 PM PST ship same day from our San Diego warehouse.

Can the CIL162 be used for outdoor day/night applications?

The CIL162 is specifically designed for day/night operation. The IR-corrected 6G all-glass design with IP67 sealing handles outdoor temperature swings, moisture, and VIS-to-NIR focus shift under 6μm. One of the best M12 options for this use case.

The CIL162 is a 16mm IR-corrected M12 lens designed for 1/1.8" to 1/1.7" sensors like the Sony IMX226 and ON Semiconductor AR0821. It resolves up to 10MP at F/2.0 with less than 6μm focus shift from visible to 850nm, making it one of the few M12 telephoto lenses that works reliably in day/night switching applications without refocusing.

The 31° field of view at 8.9mm image circle puts this firmly in telephoto territory for M12. Distortion is just -1% at 8.9mm, which is low enough for dimensional measurement and license plate recognition without software correction. The designed image circle is 8.8mm with a maximum of 10mm, so it can cover 1/1.7" sensors with margin. Use the field of view calculator at https://commonlands.com/pages/camera-field-of-view-calculator to check your exact sensor coverage.

Six all-glass elements, IP67-sealed aluminum barrel, BBAR coated, at only 6g total weight. The all-glass construction gives thermal stability that plastic-hybrid designs cannot match in outdoor temperature swings. Order CIL162-F2.0-M12A650 with the 650nm IR cut filter for daylight-only use, or CIL162-F2.0-M12ANIR without to take advantage of the IR correction.

Compatible with nearly every major board camera platform: FLIR Blackfly S, Allied Vision Alvium, iDS uEye LE (both revisions), The Imaging Source, and Basler Dart all mount directly. Uses the Commonlands CLA018 M12 lens holder with a 10-13mm tall mount.

Ships same day from San Diego for orders before 12 PM PST. Volume pricing available. Trioptics MTF test data and .STP mechanical models provided on request.
